Athlete Nutrition: Meet Jiu-Jitsu Champ Brysen French
Nuzest is pleased to introduce Brysen French as a new sports influencer.
Let's get to know Brysen French.
Q. For those of us who don’t know you, who is Brysen French?
A. Geeze, who am I… Well, people call me many things like a wrestler, fighter, football player, track athlete, Jiu-Jitsu competitor, yogi, hiker, forest junkie, cliff diver, personal trainer, kombucha brewer, super foodie, friend, son, and sometimes just crazy. But I think of myself as a kind person, driven to experiment and try new things. Whether that be training my body and mind, modifying my diet or seeking spirituality, I’m always trying to grow.
Q. What does being a Nuzest ambassador mean to you?
A. It makes me proud! Because I know that Nuzest does not take shortcuts with their products. They genuinely want people to be healthy and strong. All the ingredients are top-notch, from how they are sourced to how they are processed. So, I am confident to use Nuzest products to make my body healthier and stronger and proud to rep the Nuzest name because I know they work for the greater good.
Q. How do you make healthy choices and avoid temptations when it comes to your nutrition?
A. Other than adopting an eating lifestyle where I practice intermittent fasting, I learn from my mistakes! I pay attention and notice how certain foods make me feel. We have all felt bloated, gassy, poor digestion, inflammation, low energy, achy or just had a bad mood. But why…? The foods we use to fuel our machine either add to or slow our vibration. I’ve noticed and paid attention to how I feel, how I perform, and how I recover when I'm eating certain foods. Through much trial and error, I have decided to stick with the Clean Lean Protein options.
Q. What is your favorite indulgence?
A. Organic dark chocolate all the way!!! Anything that is 70%+ cacao. I’m eating some right now!
Q. What is your favorite healthy snack?
A. Other than organic cacao and kombucha, I love to make my own sprouted buckwheat granola using Clean Lean Protein by Nuzest to add awesome flavor and a boost of protein powder. Sprouting nuts and seeds is my jam! It makes the nut/seed easier to digest, allowing nutrients to be absorbed more efficiently. And, I think it makes them crispier and tastier!
Q. When not on the mat, how do you stay active and fit?
A. Well, I have acquired many hobbies that demand me to be fit and healthy. I absolutely love nature, backpacking, hiking mountains, cliff diving, mountain biking... I love it all! But when I'm in Portland, I can be found running trails in our nation’s largest city park, Forest Park. I also enjoy some early morning yoga and a cup of organic coffee... it's nice calming energy. And of course weight training! My style is a mixture of circuit training, Olympic bar work, flexibility, and plyometrics/speed/agility training. All that said, I feel the trick to staying fit and healthy is to have many options to choose from which makes exercise fun.
Q. What is your favorite form of exercise (besides Jiu-Jitsu)?
A. If I had to pick one… I pick nature!
Q. Speaking of what is Jiu-Jitsu?
A. Considered the “Gentle Art,” Jiu-Jitsu is wrestling as you see in high school and college, but with submissions. So, it’s basically a fight without striking each other. We compete wearing a Gi which is a thick cotton robe that can be grabbed and used to assist you or be used against you. Jiu-Jitsu was originally created for a smaller person to defeat a larger opponent by isolating and manipulating weak points such as neck, shoulders, elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists. There is a 5 belt system to identify the progression of not only skill but also honor and respect. The belt colors are white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Jiu-Jitsu is great for people of all ages looking to stay in shape and age gracefully!
Q. What are your favorite songs on your workout playlist these days?
A. I’m a huge fan of: Nahko and Medicine for the People - Warrior People and Manifesto 2 - Michael Franti - Hell fire, Sound of Sunshine - Matisyahu - One Day - George Thorogood - Bad to the Bone
Q. Aside from being a martial arts master, what do you do for fun?
A. Other than all things outside, I really love making people smile. It makes me happy to make others happy. I have learned that life flows much easier that way.
Q. What advice do you have for people wanting to kick-start a healthy lifestyle or to pump up their nutrition? A. Well, I would say start with the basics.
- Cut fast food from your life. Take pride in your food. Fast food is detrimental to your health and the health of the environment. Cook for yourself and your family.
- Pay attention to what is in your food. Read ingredient labels.
- Learn about artificial food additives (FDA-approved poison).
- Starting learning about different diet and eating styles. Expand your toolbox. Food documentaries are a great way to add to your toolbox.
- Eat for nutrition!!! Eat nutrient-dense foods, foods high in color, foods that come from the earth… not a box.
